Gifted and Talented Supplemental (Grades EC-12)
One of the most unique specialties of an alternative teaching certification program is being a teacher for gifted and talented students from the early childhood level through twelfth grade. Teaching gifted and talented students can be very rewarding but it also will require a high level of skill in being resourceful. The majority of gifted and talented students have difficulty remaining engaged within an ordinary school setting and need to be supported accordingly. As a gifted and talented educational specialist, keeping an ever growing range of topics and subjects will be important to being effective as a teacher.
What to Expect of the Alternative Certification Program for Gifted and Talented Students
An alternative teaching certification program in supplemental programs for gifted and talented students will require a standard general education academic background. The academic component will require general education courses such as English language arts, mathematics, history and speech communication. Elective courses supporting topics more in depth will benefit a gifted and talented teacher.
Towards the end of an alternative teaching certification program, expectations will usually require an internship or student teaching opportunity. The teaching professional can then obtain hands on experience working with highly capable students in their selected or designated grade levels. The opportunity to gain hands on experience is invaluable, particularly when it comes to handling the non-academic components for gifted students. Skills for Teaching Gifted and Talented Students
In addition to traditional teaching skills, educators of gifted and talented students will be more effective as educators by acquiring a base of resources to help support the deep desire for knowledge of highly capable students. It is impossible to become completely skilled in all the topics that may interest a student base that can range from preschoolers to twelfth graders.
